What is psycho-oncology?

Psycho-oncology is a specialty related to psychotherapeutic care for patients with cancer. Today, such services are mandatory in all foreign specialized clinics. MD Anderson, the largest international cancer center, states: "A psycho-oncologist is a key figure at all stages of an adult cancer patient's disease." In Germany, to obtain a license, an oncology clinic must have a psycho-oncology service.

How does psycho-oncology differ from oncopsychology?

These terms are usually perceived as synonymous, but in our opinion, they have different meanings.

Oncopsychology focuses mainly on the correction of personality and psychopathological disorders that have arisen as a result of the disease. Psychologists usually work with this. Psycho-oncology, on the other hand, should be considered as a branch of medicine aimed at psychotherapy of the causes of the disease. Its task is to actively involve the patient in the process of eliminating the tumor and activating the body's natural healing resources.
