Traditional medicine often treats only symptoms, ignoring the psychosomatic nature of diseases. However, diseases do not always affect only one organ - they can be related to a person's mental state. As Socrates wrote: "There is no bodily illness apart from the soul". This statement is confirmed by modern sciences, such as psychoneuroimmunology and epigenetics, which prove that most diseases are psychosomatic in nature.
Chronic stress suppresses the immune system and other defense mechanisms of the body. Stress is caused by unresolved life problems, mental trauma, conflicts, and repressed feelings. The longer a stressful situation lasts, the more deeply the body's functions are impaired, up to and including the development of serious diseases, including cancer. A complete cure is impossible without eliminating the psychological causes of the disease.
What is psychosomatic pathology?
Psychosomatic pathology is a health disorder that occurs due to somatization, i.e. the "embodiment" of negative emotions in the body. This leads to discomfort and, in case of prolonged existence, to disorders in the structure and functions of organs. Somatization can be acute, when caused by a sharp stress (for example, the loss of a loved one), or persistent (chronic), when there are lingering psychological problems. Such a disease is a sign of a violation of human integrity, a lack of harmony between the mental, social, spiritual, and physical levels.
How does psychosomatic illness occur?
The process begins with single psychosomatic reactions that disappear when the stressful situation changes. If the situation persists, a functional psychosomatic syndrome characterized by recurrent somatic symptoms occurs. If the situation does not change, it can lead to the development of a psychosomatic disease with morphological changes in organs. It is based on the psychophysiological dominance of the disease.
How does psychotherapy help in treatment?
Psychotherapy has the same profound effect on the body as medication. Studies have shown that under the influence of psychotherapy, the level of the stress hormone cortisol decreases, the immune status and the activity of genes responsible for inflammatory reactions normalize. This changes the genetic activity at the level of organs and tissues, which is the biological basis for activating the recovery process.
