Psychotherapy + psychedelic medicine = synergy

Crisis situation in modern psychiatry

Psychopharmacology has barely advanced in recent decades: the number of FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of mental disorders has dropped from 13 in 1996 to just one in 2016.
Classic antidepressants act slowly, often do not provide complete remission, and have a number of serious side effects (weight gain, sexual dysfunction, heart problems, etc.).

The beginning of the "psychedelic revolution"

In response to the impasse of traditional medicine, interest in psychedelic substances has rekindled—drugs that expand consciousness and can quickly affect the psyche.
After a period of active research in the 1950s–1970s (over 1,000 papers, 40,000 patients), all psychedelics were banned in the United States in the 1970s. The reasons were not only abuse, but also social upheaval caused by protests against the Vietnam War.

The renaissance of research in the 21st century

Since the early 2000s, the study of psychedelic substances has resumed, and over the past decade, their scientific research has become one of the most dynamic fields of medicine.
Today, over 400 clinical trials have been registered, and the FDA has granted breakthrough therapy status to psilocybin (depression) and MDMA (PTSD).

How psychedelic medicine works

Psychedelics are not drugs in the traditional sense: they are not toxic, do not cause addiction, and do not have a pronounced withdrawal syndrome.
Their action is associated with the activation of serotonin receptors (5-HT2A), which affect emotions, mood, cognition, learning, inflammation, and brain plasticity.
Therefore, they were given a new name - psychoplastogens - drugs capable of restructuring pathological neural circuits even after a single dose .

Main psychedelic substances

  1. Classic : psilocybin, LSD, DMT, mescaline.

  2. MDMA (ecstasy): acts through serotonin and dopamine.

  3. Кетамін: дисоціативний анестетик, антагоніст NMDA-рецепторів.

  4. Other substances : ibogaine, salvinorin A — with unique mechanisms of action.

Therapeutic effect of altered states of consciousness

Psychedelics weaken the ego, opening up access to the subconscious. This allows:

  • to process psychological traumas more deeply,

  • change destructive thinking patterns,

  • find new meanings and resources for healing.

Experience

Many patients describe the experience as one of the most important events in their lives , opening the way to deep self-discovery.
A sense of unity, awe, timelessness, enlightenment—all of this contributes to lasting positive changes in behavior, emotions, and worldview.
