Sodium oxybutyrate: a modern remedy for the treatment of mental and psychosomatic disorders
1. What is sodium oxybutyrate?

Sodium oxybutyrate (SO) is a drug used for non-inhalation anesthesia in surgery, obstetrics, and gynecology. In psychiatric and neurological practice, it is traditionally used to treat intoxications and traumatic lesions of the central nervous system (CNS).

2. Chemical structure and pharmacological properties
  • Chemical structure: sodium salt of gamma-oxybutyric acid .

  • By action: close to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) - the main inhibitory mediator of the CNS.

  • It has nootropic properties , as well as:

    • Sedative

    • Sleeping pill

    • Painkiller

    • Muscle relaxant effect

In addition, HE:

  • Activates cellular respiration

  • Protects the body from the effects of radiation

  • Increases resistance to hypoxia

  • Lowers cholesterol levels

  • Improves blood circulation in the abdominal cavity

3. Application in the world

Abroad, ON is widely used:

  • As a general anesthetic

  • For the treatment of narcolepsy (daytime sleepiness)

  • During labor (increased contractions, dilation of the cervix)

  • For the treatment of alcoholism and withdrawal syndrome

  • In the treatment of anxiety and psychotic disorders

In higher doses, OH causes:

  • Easy to fall asleep

  • Full, deep, refreshing sleep

  • Feeling energized and rested after waking up

7. Security
  • Extremely low toxicity

  • Completely breaks down in the body into water and carbon dioxide

  • Does not form toxic metabolites

  • In high doses, may cause short-term nausea

The drug does not cause chemical dependence , but with prolonged uncontrolled use, psychological dependence is possible , therefore it is a controlled substance .

8. Treatment format

Infusion therapy is a drip administration of sodium oxybutyrate over 40–50 minutes.

This is an effective method in the treatment of mental and psychosomatic disorders, especially those related to overexertion, anxiety, chronic pain, and fatigue .
